Tribute to Women's History Month: Honoring the Women Who Raised Us
As we celebrate Women's History Month, I find myself reflecting on the extraordinary women who have shaped our lives with unwavering love and strength. For many of us, particularly survivors of unimaginable trauma, the presence of these women has been a beacon of hope and healing.
In the aftermath of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, many of us were left orphaned, carrying the weight of grief and trauma. We struggled to find the words to express our pain. During such dark times, the support of a family that offers physical care and emotional comfort is essential for survival and healing. The power of love, kindness, and understanding is immeasurable.
Among the most remarkable women in my life were the widows—those who lost their husbands, children, and families yet still opened their hearts to children in need. Even in their grief, these women radiated compassion. They showed us that empathy can heal, and love can uplift, even in the most broken circumstances. These women are our heroes.
At just 14 years old during the genocide, I survived alongside my mother and aunt. Together, they became our unwavering support system—my sister, cousin, and I. Through their strength and tenderness, we found our way through the darkest of times. My mother returned to teaching, dedicating her love to children who reminded her of my brothers she lost, pouring grace into them even while carrying her own pain. My aunt, affectionately known as "Chouchou", kept her sweet spirit alive, always offering joy, even amid sorrow. Together, they allowed me to be myself, nurturing me with love, laughter, and guidance.
These two incredible women were my angels—my reasons for holding on. Their love, resilience, and boundless empathy continue to inspire me, shaping who I am today. I often say that I am alive because of them, and I will be forever grateful for their presence in my life.
This Women's History Month, I honor not just my mother and aunt, but all the extraordinary women who have shaped us with their strength, love, and grace. May we continue to shower them with the love and recognition they so richly deserve.
